Itemising your budget will aid you in reaching your total Expenditure for your project and therefore how much Income you will need to secure. Make sure your Total Income matches your Total Expenditure.

INCOME

  • Grants secured from Public Funders, ie: Lottery, Arts Council, Local Authority.
  • Sponsorship secured from Private Funders, ie: Sony, UBS.
  • Partnerships with organisations. Choose a partner trhat will benefit from your project. They can provide in kind as well as cash support.

Public Funding

Arts Council of England, www.artscouncil.org

The Arts Council is a national oganisation that co-ordinates government funding for the arts. It is divided into regional offices and applicants are invited to apply to their regional office. Individuals, institutions and organisations can apply through Grants for the Arts scheme via the online form. It is encouraged that applicants source match funding of at least 10% in cash, but the more the better. Applications of £5000 and under have a six week turn around. While applications of £5000 and over have a twelve week turn around. Applicants are able to book one to one surgeries, but it is strongly advised that your project is well developed before you see them.

British Council. www.britishcouncil.org

The British Council is a national organisation that promotes British Culture internationally. They will support touring projects showcasing UK artists and their artists travel and transportation of artworks.

Visiting Arts, www.visitingarts.org.uk

Visiting Arts is an affiliate organisation of the British Council. They support the representation of visiting artists in the UK.

ArtQuest, www.artquest.org.uk

ArtQuest is a London based organisation that provides a comprehensive advice and information service to the visual arts sector. It is affiliated with University for the Arts and The Arts Council of England and can greatly assist with project development and funding strategies.

Awards for All, www.awardsforall.org.uk

Awards for All is a Lottery grants scheme for local communities. To apply for this fund you need to have a constituted business bank account with two signatories. They only accept projects that directly benefit a community. This can act as good match funding for an Arts Council grant.

Trusts and Foundations

Trusts and foundation take a variety of forms, each have different histories and guidelines, a wide range of which support the arts. In main they are geared towards charitable organisations and or galleries with some exceptions. The key arts funders are: Esme Fairbairn; Elephant Trust; Moose Foundation; Henry Moore Foundation. There are others that mainly support educational and community based projects. Funder Finder is software that is avialable in libraries that will assist in the further research of Trusts and Foundations.

Cultural Embassies

There are many Cultural Embassies in London that are willing to support artists from their country. They will not be able to support with significant funds, but they may be able to assist with marketing, transport and accomodation. This can act as good match funding for small Arts Council applications. The best way to approach them is directly via their marketing departments.

Sponsorship

Sponsorship is a wide field of funding, ranging from local business supporting projects in kind to multi national companies supporting projects for their own propmotion. If your project is not on a large scale do not approach large companies. Uk Sponsorhsip offers access to information and contact details relating to sponsorship opportunities in the UK.

Partnerships

Partnerships are a crucial part to any project and can only be formed in relation to the nature of the project. The project needs to have clear benefits for the partner to commit with cash or in kind sponsorship. Local Authoroities and councils are a good way to forge partnerships if your project benefits a local area.

Notes from session:

  • Once get some funding, benefactors etc. it can attract others.
  • Arts Council, young schemes, provide empty shop windows for projects?
  • Alot of help can be in kind (for free, favours etc. help out when they need you…)
  • If possible it is good to get mentoring and advisement.
  • Artists fees average about £200 per day
    • cost of commisioning work?
    • transportation of old work
  • Permission and payment for public spaces. (Can find using ordanance survey maps)
  • Installation costs
  • Public liability - can often cover venues that you are in
  • Contents Insurance

Need to research costs more and variations in insurance for spaces and the artwork itself against all possibilities.
